The first settlement in Clearwater County was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1858. The name "New Hope" came from an older spelling of the same word and it was chosen because of its location on a small stream called "Hope" and its high altitude (above sea level) relative to other settlements in Clearwater County. When American settlers arrived in Minnesota during the early 19th century, they discovered that land around present-day New Hope had been claimed by previous Native American tribes for hunting and fishing grounds. In 1856, United States Army Captain John Dickey led an expedition to claim this land for the United States government. After reaching New Hope on July 10, 1856, Dickey erected a wooden tower as a landmark known today as the Dickey Tower. In 1865, Congress passed legislation providing for Indian removal fromMinnesota and throughout America; this policy led to large numbers of Native Americans being removed to Oklahoma and Texas. Many of these people were forced into what is now eastern Minnesota – where they faced extreme poverty and hardships such as scalping or execution if they refused to leave their homes. By 1870, about one-third of all Native Americans living in northeastern Minnesota had died from disease or violence at the hands of white settlers or other Indians

The most famous building in New Hope is the Macedonia Baptist Church which was built in 1902 and features a Neo-Gothic style. New Hope was an unincorporated community in Iron County, Minnesota, United States. It had a post office from 1912 to 1916.
