The traders soon realized that they had found an ideal location for their outpost because of its natural resources: ample water resources, fertile soil, and hills that provided cover from hostile Sioux tribes. Despite this initial success, relations between traders and indigenous peoples were fraught with tension until 1851 when Captain Janssen negotiated an agreement whereby all Native Americans living within three miles of his post would be granted immunity from attack for five years; this pact served as a model for later treaties between U.S., Canada, and American Indian groups throughout Iowa Territories (later Minnesota). In 1852, Dutchman Johannes Heckel established a fur trading post nearby which helped increase trade with Native Americans throughthe area; he named it Fort Snelling after his home village in Holland (now Amsterdam). By 1861, Fort Snelling had become one of the largest fur posts in North America due to its strategic location on both sides of the Missouri River—a position that allowed him to sell goods directly to Native Americans rather than through intermediaries such as other traders or merchants.
