BB guns were first brought to the United States in 1892 by John W. Stephenson, a gunsmith and entrepreneur from England. Stephenson imported several thousand pistols, rifles, shotguns and pistols into the country, but they all failed to catch on with American citizens. He decided to start his own company in New Hope, Minnesota, to create these new firearms. The company became known as Stevens Arms Company and produced its first BB guns in 1893. The guns were small and rudimentary affairs that consisted of a barrel about 12 inches long and an ammunition clip that held six rounds of 9mm ammunition. However, the success of this product led to other companies being founded by Stephenson throughout America. By 1910, there were over 100 Stevens Arms Company facilities across the United States producing BB guns for a variety of different purposes including self-defense, target shooting and militaria.[1] The popularity of BB guns continued through World War II until they were replaced by automatic weapons like the M1 Garand Rifle which began production in 1942. This change was due to concerns over potential injuries caused by ricochets from high-capacity ammo magazines used with assault rifles like the M1 Garand Rifle. Automatic weapons eventually became popular enough that Stevens Arms Company ceased production altogether in 1969[2]. However, their legacy lives on today as a popular manufacturer of small handguns for personal protection around the world.[3]

The first settlers to arrive in what is now New Hope were farmers who arrived from Canada in 1871 along with other families fleeing British rule.[1] By 1909, there were 1,500 people living in New Hope after years of growth spurred by demand for land around Moravia Lakefinder dam.[2] landowner Charles Hennepin donated 156 acres (61 ha) to the village for use as their own cemetery,[3][4] which served as a model for later cemeteries across North America including those at Arlington Cemetery and Mount Auburn Cemetery.[5][6] Early settlement times were difficult due to natural obstacles: steep cliffs surrounding the small creek that provided water for much of the area[7]; Laird Creek flowed into Morrison Bayou just south of where present day Old Town stands today[8];[9] areas today known as West Side Street and East Side Street contain more than 100 archaeological sites dating back to Paleoindian times which help support claims that this was one of earliest villages in Minnesota.[10][11][12][13] In 1875 residents organized themselves into two branches of the Methodist Church:[14],[15], but religious services continued to be held outdoors until 1895 when indoor church construction began on Main Street between McLeod Avenue and present day Second Avenue South according to plans submitted by Reverend JT Floyd with assistance from Druben & Sons lumberyard owner John Browning."[16],[17] In 1905–1906 Swedenborg Chapel also moved from Hennepin Hall into new building erected on Lots 7 & 8 opposite School House; this chapel services continue still today outside Classes Room door facing Main Street.– Rev GJ Snellenberger
