New Hope, Minnesota is a small town in the state of Minnesota. The population was 648 at the 2010 census. New Hope is located on the border of Ramsey and Morrison counties. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. New Hope began as a farm village in 1881, when eight settlers from Illinois founded what would be called "The Ranch", east of present-day New Hope. They named it after their hope for better times ahead - after all, they were living near Milwaukee then and thought things might improve with new transportation options and access to land west of the Mississippi River. In 1912, when Prohibition made alcohol illegal in most U.S. states except Alaska, The Ranch became one of only two Canadian-owned restaurants in the United States open to American citizens; it still operates today as an entree-only restaurant known as The Prairie View Inn & Spa (PVIS). The first post office was established at New Hope in 1892, but it closed just four years later because there was noone living there to take care of mail! In 1909, Congress passed the Rural Electrification Act which allowed towns and villages within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of a major city or main railroad line to get electricity from local power plants while prohibition continued inside those cities and towns! This gave rise to what is now known as "electricity deregulation" - so much for Progressivism... In 1916, New Hope's first high school opened its doors; that same year also saw its first church service: Reverend Harry Aiken conducted services at First Presbyterian Church before classes started at Hudson Valley High School nearby on Nicollet Avenue. In 1922, the town voted to become an independent municipality under the name "NewHope". 2 years later (1926), voters approved annexation by Minneapolis – making NewHope one big city again!!! With more than 4500 residents now residing here (& counting!), we're proud to call ourselves "Minnesota's oldest continuously operating community." And we're not done yet!
