In 1872, they merged with Riceville to form what is now known as New Brighton. At first, only men were allowed to live here; however, this soon changed when women began moving into this community as well. Today, most residents are male or female descendants of those who made up early New Brighton families. One of the earliest businesses in New Brighton was an flour mill which opened in 1863. By 1865, there were seven churches and over 20 homes in town – all run by either religious or social organizations like Mothers' Union (Maternal Aid Society), Ancient Order Masons (AOM), United Methodists (UM), Odd Fellows (OAF), Presbyterian Church (PC) and Congregational Church (CK). In 1868-69 an Italianate brick building replaced the old flour mill building on Third Street which had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier while operated by local farmers as their primary source of income from grain exports to Illinois via riverboats carrying passengers and goods across the Mississippi River below St Anthony Falls. The new mill continued production until 1917 but during that time it also became home to one ofMinnesota's first movie theaters - Majestic Theatre at 4th & Page Streets (). In 1916-17 a new post office was built at First Avenue North and Second Street Nw., becoming one ofthe few towns east of Minneapolis without its own post office until it amalgamated with Minneapolis in 1949 (). During World War II many munitions plants were constructed nearby including: Peconic Arsenal Ammunition Plant(later Pembina Arsenal) on Hennepin Avenue just south of downtown; Fort Snelling Ammunition Plant( later Stillwater Ammunition plant ); White Sands Ordnance Range (); Beardsley Army Airfield (); Brunswick Army Airfield (); Lowry Chemical Warfare Center []; Clear Lake Naval Shipyard ]. However none produced any weapons actually used against Americans however many tonnes more munitions were produced overall than if these plants had not been built; yet no charges have ever been brought against anyone!. Many residents left town during these years for various reasons such as racial discrimination (), high taxes (), hard labor jobs {} or simply because life outside had become too difficult (). Many returned once hostilities ended but others continued living elsewhere through out the following decades before finally leaving altogether after racially motivated violence erupted again neartown center starting around 1990-. Most residents returned sometime between 2000-2005 despite some initial resistance due to changing demographics/life styles () within central Minnesotan city neighborhood). A few people remain permanently resident although most summertime rentals take place outside town limits.. As recently as 2000 about 60%of all workforce employed within city limits held positions within government or nonprofit agencies;; 30% worked in retail trade while 10% worked in professional services}. However recent trends suggest that number will decrease below 50%.
