The first settlers to what is now New Brighton were five men from Massachusetts who went overland to present day Hastings, Minnesota on July 15, 1851. They named their new settlement after their home town, Newton Abbot, England. In 1865, the Canadian Pacific Railway came through and built a line south from Stroudsburg, PA to Duluth, MN. This made it easier for people to get goods and services overland and brought more people into the community. A post office was established at New Brighton on December 5th of that year. The name change happened because there were so many residents who had maiden names beginning with "Brighton." New Brighton started as a small farming community with only a few acres of land available for cultivation. Over time however, it became an important center for trade and commerce in the region due to its location close to both Duluth and Minneapolis-St Paul airports. From 1978 until 2000, New Brighton held the distinction of being one of just four towns in Minnesota still using traditional hand-poured ice cream byproducts call "Sour Patch" (the others are Coopersville (1980–1982), Albert Lea (1986–1988) and Plymouth (1991)).

Military rifles such as the M1 Garand rifle and M16A2 assault rifle; however, they remained relatively rare until recently when they have become increasingly popular among law enforcement agencies across America as well as hunting enthusiasts worldwide!
