The name may have been derived from a Dakota word meaning "a mound with a flat top." A post office was established at Mounds View in 1847, and by 1861, the population had grown to 511 residents. By 1885, when it was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer after his death in battle at Little Bighorn, the population had reached 914 people. In 1913–14, construction began on an all-weather road between Winnipeg and Duluth which would make Mounds View one of the most accessible communities within 50 miles (80 km). The town's growth accelerated during World War II as aluminum production increased around Duluth; since many people living near Aluminum Mines worked out of town during wartime shortages, businesses grew rapidly and property values soared. In 1951–52, plans were made to build a dam across Clearwater River which would Have affected much of Mound view but no dam ever built due to protests by local citizens who felt their land would be taken away if it happened. Today's economy revolves around agriculture; crops include corn, soybeans and wheat; dairy products are also produced here; since few people live in town anymore due to its remote location and lack of amenities compared to nearby towns such as Minneapolis or Duluth*, most residents rely on subsistence farming practices supplemented by occasional visits from family or friends during times Of drought or other emergencies

Mounds View is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Clearwater River northeast of Minneapolis. The population was 24,545 at the 2010 census. Mounds View has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 4,000 years and is one of only a few cities in Minnesota with an ancient indigenous cemetery still standing today. The first European to visit Mounds View was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1770. Cook named it "Cape York" after Cape York Peninsula, Australia because he thought he saw "the remains of a great body of men or animals which had probably been killed thereabouts." A plaque at the entrance to City Hall commemorates Cook's visit and also notes that Moundview is one of only two American cities with an ancient indigenous cemetery still standing today (the other being Potosi, New Mexico). Moundview started as part of what would become Minneapolis in 1854 when land was acquired from Chief Red Cloud and others along the Clearwater River. The town site was chosen due to its proximity to mines and railroad lines and its location near several natural resources: timber, coal, iron ore, golds and silver deposits. By 1860, Moundview had a post office, hotel and school. In 1870–71 local farmers began donation drives for $5 each into what became known as "The Mother Lode". This led to the founding of The Mining Company which used Methodism as its religion but yielded little mineral content until 1913 when more than 50% by weight were found hidden inside cuttings from old trees! In 1872–73 construction began on what would become one of America's first freeways- First Avenue- linking Moundview with downtown Minneapolis via University Avenue. By 1880 there were six businesses in operation including hardware store/grocery store/barber shop/lumber yard; meat market; bakery; cigar store; wagon dealership; blacksmith shop;and shoe stores all within walking distance of each other! During World War II many residents worked at nearby Boeing plants manufacturing military planes like B-17s and B-29s while their families stayed home grew food gardens or raised livestock! After hostilities ended most people returned to their jobs but some extensions went into use such as State Highway 152 which served as a bypass until it was decommissioned in 1969 just north of downtown before reuniting with First Avenue!
