Mounds View is a small village located in the town of Mounds View, Minnesota. It was founded in 1851 by German immigrants and has been continuously in existence since then. The name comes from the remains of an ancient Iroquois village that was destroyed by the United States government during the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The village is now a census-designated place (CDP) and has a population of around 350. Mounds View first emerged as a farming community when Captain John Stiles and his family set up shop there in 1851. By 1870, however, it had become an important transportation hub due to its location on the Hutchinson road between Minneapolis and Duluth. In 1865, Mounds View became part of what would become Ramsey County and quickly developed into a thriving community with several hundred residents. The early days at Mounds View were difficult for both the settlers and the Native Americans who lived there. For much of its history, Mounds View was contested territory between Ulysses S Grant’s army during the American Civil War and the Dakota Sioux tribe. This tension led to sporadic skirmishes throughout the years, but never came close to reaching a boil until after World War II ended America’s involvement in that conflict. In 1951, following America’s entry into World War II, many Germans began arriving in Minnesota looking for new opportunities after their country was bombed wholesale by Japan. Many saw Moundview as an ideal opportunity to start anew after years living under British rule back home. The original founders of Moundview – Captain John Stiles and his wife Anna – eagerly welcomed these newcomers with open arms; they soon started building homes and crops while still keeping tight control over their small community center which housed a chapel, schoolhouse, storeroom, barn/garage complex, water pump house/pump room/cabinet etc.. It wasn’t long before other Germans followed Captain John Stiles lead and started setting up business ventures within Moundview itself: grocery stores (Kramer's), mechanics shops (Huber & Co.), carpenters (Fischer Bros.), tailors (Goudreau Brothers), printers (Stahlwerke), photographers (!). Mounds View was founded in 1854 by Alexander McDowell. It became a town in 1871 and its name was changed to Mounds View, Minnesota in 1902. The population of Moundsview decreased from 1,546 in 1880 to 534 in 1910 but it increased to 1,868 in 1920. The town stopped growing after the Great Depression and had a population of 614 people in 1950.
