Mounds View, Minnesota was first settled in 1851 by the Dakota Sioux. The town was named after the Mound House which was built in 1834. The first post office opened in 1852. In 1865, the town became a county seat and remained so until it merged with Minneapolis in 1901.

In 1929–30,[5] construction began on what would become Mound View Stadium which would anchor downtown Mound View for over 60 years until demolition in 1995 allowed development back onto First Avenue South (now known as Neilson Avenue).[6][7][8][9][10] The city's growth has come primarily through suburban annexation by neighboring towns: White Bear Lake annexed in 1959,[11] Maple Grove annexed in 1970,[12] Eden Prairie annexed in 1984,[13][14], Bloomington annexed annexation petitions were filed for Hennepin County but all were denied because there did not exist enough registered voters to support annexation petitions[15], and Stroudsburg Annexation Petition #2 was accepted by the City Council on July 8th 2018[16].

In 1903, part of Summit County was annexed into Hennepin County; however, most of the farming land within Summit County remained undeveloped until after World War II when many farmers moved into Mounds View because of its close proximity to jobs in Minneapolis and elsewhere. After World War II, many more citizens moved to Mounds View as new subdivisions were developed throughout central Minnesota and became known as "mumps", or subdivisions with schools rather than individual homes or farms. In 1957-58, work started on building what would become one of the largest shopping malls in America when it opened near downtown Minneapolis; it remains open today as First National Shopping Center MN
