The first settler in Mounds View was Nicholas Sylvestre, who arrived in 1871. In 1893, Charles Goodyear founded Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in what is now downtown Mounds View. Mounds View has a school system that offers grades K-12th education. It also has two hospitals: one located on Main Street and one on Sheridan Road. A library also resides within the town limits as do several businesses including a post office and restaurants. Mound View was laid out in 1873 by Norwegian immigrants on land they had purchased from the Dakota Sioux. The first permanent settler arrived in 1881 and named it after General George Armstrong Custer's squadron which had fought against the Sioux on the Arctic coast two years earlier. The post office at Mounds View was established in 1882 and remained in operation until it closed on December 15, 1922. Mounds View is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in Mounds View were George and Martha Carlson who arrived in 1854 from Duluth, Minnesota. They built a cabin on the site of what is now known as White Street and started farming their land. In 1865, they bought two more acres and started to build a house which they named "Moundview". The first post office was established in 1870 and it was called "Dunn". In 1875, they erected a large white frame church on the property now known as Sixth Avenue South. Reverend Wm Hennepin preached there for many years before his death in 1902. The town name come from an Indian word meaning "meadow by the river" or "plain where trees grow." In 1916, Mounds View became part of the City of Minneapolis when it was created through consolidation of several towns within Hennepin County. At that time, Mounds View had a population of only 2 people living inside its own boundaries! In 1951, Mounds View voted to become an independent city under the leadership of Mayor John Fenton with plans to annex neighboring communities such as Hopkinsville (then called North Star) and Falcon Heights if they desired to do so. However this attempt failed due to strong opposition from those municipalities who felt their rights were being violated by annexation into Morningside Heights! In 1984-85, negotiations took place between Minneapolis-Saint Paul Municipality and various community groups proposing annexation into either municipality would bring much needed jobs and tax revenue to both cities while preserving open space within each municipality limits – something that residents had been advocacy for since before amalgamation happened! Ultimately agreement was reached which annexed Falcon Heights with Morningside Heights creating one big city with no ability for these communities to keep separate entities! This event symbolized how far times have come for these two communities; however it also brought about some new challenges as both neighborhoods continue to grapple with how best to work together including issues like zoning/land use restrictions & transportation options etc.– all still facing resolution today!
