In 1861, settlers began to arrive from Illinois via Two Forks Bridge across the Mississippi River into what is nowMinnesota under the auspices ofthe Minnesota Territorial Legislature to form Dakota Territory; they named their new community "Mumpsville." In 1865 they renamed it "Moundview," after an early settler's hill near where it currently stands. There were several other settlements established before Mumpsville became self-sufficient as a farming community with peak populations around 1800: White Cloud (1807), Black Hawk (1811), Sun Prairie (1815), Wadena (1827), Savage (1828), Red Wing (1829), Blue Earth (1830)and Villages North East Settlement( 1830). According to local legend, one group of pioneers fought off Native Americans while traveling downriver when there was no water available for their wagon train so that all members may be return safe home safely!

Mounds View is a village in the town of Cottonwood, Minnesota, United States. The population was 446 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Mounds View was Dolphus Greeley in 1853. He and his family were farmers and later ranchers. In 1885, he donated land to make way for a public school system in Cottonwood. The first building on the property was built as a schoolhouse, but it burned down in 1904. A new school was built on the site in 1907, and it served as the village's primary school until 1959 when it became an junior high school. Mounds View has had several businesses over its history including a post office from 1912 to 1954, an ice cream parlor from 1951 to 1962, a gas station from 1966 to 1978, and most recently an auto dealership from 2002 to 2006. By 1860 Mounds View had become the largest settlement in what is now Ramsey County. In 1871 the town incorporated as a village and later became an city. Today Mounds View is an agricultural community with a small population of about 100 residents.
