The community was named after General George Armstrong Custer's army encampment at Mound City in Kiowa County, Kansas which had been destroyed by Indian warriors in 1847. When General Custer's party reached Minnesota, he ordered all his troops to move out of the state because it was near Indian Territory and it would not be safe for them to stay there any longer. Mounds View was founded on October 26, 1851 when fifty-seven citizens from around Minneapolis gathered to laid out their town on land that had been donated by Major Zenon Plattefeldt (a German immigrant). The town started off as just a few homes but quickly grew into a thriving community with over two hundred residents. It soon became one of the most important business and political centers in the area and played an important role in helping develop Minneapolis into what it is today.
