They built their home on the site of what is now known as Armstrong Elementary School. The early guns were made from wood, but over time they became more and more complex. By 1865, gunsmiths had begun making brass and iron handguns for the U.S. military. By 1870, gun shop owners in Mounds View were selling pistols to farmers and other citizens across the state of Minnesota. By 1915, Mounds View had become one of the largest towns in north-central Minnesota when it ratified its own municipal charter providing for police service and fire department protection. In that year, Mayor John Witherspoon authorized construction of a new armory which would be used for both law enforcement duties as well as storing weapons for local military forces during World War I. The Municipal Building was completed in 1920 and served as the community's headquarters until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. Mounds View is a small town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,707 at the 2010 census. The name comes from an 1851 map of the area and is most likely derived from the Dakota word "mound" or " moundock." The first settler in what is now Mounds View was John Beeson in 1853. By 1865, there were 10 residents living in the community. In 1870, George Silliman arrived from Illinois to homestead on land he had acquired east of Minneapolis. He began to clear land for farming and built a cabin near present-day Mounds View Road. In 1881, Silliman donated lands to the town for a school district and sawmill; it became the cornerstone of Mounds View's current school system. In 1897, local farmer C W Goodrich donated 100 acres (40 hectares) of forested land south of Moundsview along present-day County Highway E for use as a park with open space on its eastern edge. The park would house tennis courts, playgrounds, and other features until it closed in 1955 due to development by nearby Green Bay Packers owner Robert Kibbe. The post office at Mounds View was established in 1909; it closed five years later because of low mail volume. A new post office opened at newly developed West Side Settlement in 1911 when that community became part of Mounds View. It remained open until 1974 when service ended due to changes in postal law related tothe opening of ZIP codes within Minnesota during that decade). This closure followed similar closures throughout Hennepin County which eliminated most local mail services after 1975 except for those providing package delivery which continued until 2003 when all package delivery ceased within county limits despite efforts by several organizations including MN Post Office workers' union Local 282 to keep service going..
