The Mound Builders were a group of early Native Americans who built large mounds in central Minnesota from about 1000CE to 1500CE. The first known European settler in what is now Mounds View was John Mills, who arrived around 1821 and platted what is today Moundsview Township on July 8, 1824. The area that would become Mound View Township was part of present-day Bloomington until it became a part of Minneapolis in 1855. Mound View had its start as a small farming community near the confluence of Two Rivers and Hennepin Rivers, which drained into the Mississippi River centuries ago. In 1840, Alexander McKenzie donated land to form what would become MoundsView Township; he named it for his father-in-law's Dakota Sioux name "Mound Lake". In 1865, lumberman George Aitken donated 5 acres (2 ha) to build a schoolhouse and insane asylum; this later became the first home of New Brighton Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1870, James Jorgenson purchased an acre (0.40 ha) lot north of town for use as his farmstead; he named it after his maternal grandfather Jacob Jorgenson (1811–75). After years of development by various individuals and groups over time, MOUND VIEW TOWNSHIP was organized as one township on February 17th, 1911 by Mayor Lewis Waddell with corporate status granted on November 3rd that year by Governor Floyd Bendixen under Section 7101(a)(1) ofthe State Constitution . On December 14th 1913 there was another election for township officers which resulted in three new members: Josephine Stoltzfusone (D), Harry Schultz (R), and Addie Reese (D). On January 1st 1914 Superintendent George Kromm established morning classes from 6am to 10am at Maplewood School then continued these throughout the day at schools within two weeks until all students were moved to Central High SchoolJanuary 15th due to construction projects taking place across town including opening up Crow Wing Park adjacent to Central High School
