Moorhead is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Mississippi River. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. Moorhead is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and the larger Twin Cities–Moorhead Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of over 1 million people. The first European settlers in what is now Moorhead were French fur traders and missionaries who arrived in 1821. By 1825, General James Wahlgren had founded a fur trade post at present day Moorhead on an bluff overlooking the river where he built his home and office today. In 1827, local farmers started to grow crops near by and began to build homes around 1830 on land that would later be called “Moorhead Heights” or “Moorhead Street” because of its location on a rise above the river valley. In 1836, surveyors reported that there was enough water available for farming east of Mankato but not yet enough for growing rice west of Mankato so Governor Andrew Johnson ordered Major George Sibley to begin draining marshes east of Mankato and filling them with earth to form Rice Lake. This event is generally considered to be when Moorheads history began as a village . On January 15th 1840, Congress approved a bill creating Dakota Territory which included all present-day Minnesota except for portions including Moorhead lying within Dakota Territory boundaries (present-day North Dakota). Determined to protect their farmland from being taken by Dakotans making it possible for them keep their cultural artifacts such as historic buildings still standing in their community today, farm families formed a resistance movement against government encroachment into their midst during this time period known as The Battle of Rice Lake . After years of peaceful protests against government policies that they felt were infringing upon their constitutional rights as farmers, they eventually successful forced officials from government Fort Snelling out of town after successfully holding back Dakotan invasions throughout 1862-1863; this event is also generally considered to be when The Battle Of Rice Lake ended officially with no fatalities on either side
