Moorhead is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. Moorhead was founded in 1881 as a small town on the east side of the Mississippi River. In 1904, it became an incorporated city. It grew rapidly during World War II and reached its peak population of 1,500 in 1940. After the war, growth slowed and the population fell to 488 by 2000. However, recent growth has returned and Moorhead is now home to 668 residents. Moorhead was settled by Scandinavian immigrants who arrived in 1851-1852 from Norway and Denmark. The first post office was established in 1881, and within five years there were several businesses operating out of what is now the downtown area: a bakery (1883), saddlery (1885), grocery store (1887), dry goods store (1901), lumberyard (1902) and flour mill (1904). By 1907 there were nine schools in town; three elementary schools, two high schools and one college/university school. The early settlers had difficulties getting along with their new neighbors on the East Side of the Mississippi River where they lived for many years after moving westward over land that had been granted to them by treaty with Native American nations including Sioux Nation leaders ceded under terms of Great Britain’s Treaty of Young America which ended hostilities between British North America and France’s Louisiana Purchase in 1803A few miles upriver from where Moorhead today stands pioneer Willard Halsey built his log cabin on October 15th Aged 16 – construction began ten days later onOctober 20th Aged 17 when Halsey donated his land to become Moorhead Township having come downriver from Stroudsburg Michigan originally bound for DuluthMinnesota then Minneapolis Minnesota Territory he also bought 2 homes lot 3 lots 10 acres northwest corner main street east side road about half way between state line Kansas about 1 mile south west of creek long house railroad track . . . these buildings served as Post Office until 1886 when First Territorial Congress moved Capital from Topeka Kansas Eastern Nebraska Territory into this new Topeka Territory . . . At time local citizens voted to name their township after General George Armstrong Custer who died July 7 1863 at Fort bite tito near present day Hastings Nebraska while hunting buffaloes near Crow Wing MN during fight with Cheyenne Indians led by Chief Black Hills Apache warriors known as " Kiowa"Custer's death resulted in open warfare between Indian Tribes over ownership or control of vast buffalo herds located primarily along Missouri borderThis event symbolized end of frontier system which allowed fur trader & soldier encounters with Native AmericansResulting numerous massacres such as this one along Missouri-Kansas Border
Moorhead was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants as a small farming community on the eastern edge of Minnesota. By 1907, its population had grown to over 10,000 and it became a prosperous town with several industries including lumber, potatoes, and cattle. Moorhead has been renamed multiple times throughout its history: in 1881, 1913, and 1957. In 2007, the town merged with neighboring Hibbing to form the city of Hibbing-Moorhead.
