The city was incorporated on November 3, 1903. It is named after Wm. B. Moor and his heirs under an estate gift from John A. Hennepin in 1856 and as a result it has been called "the Twin Cities of the North." Moorhead grew up around logging camps that were located near the current town site in 1871 when settlers first arrived in Dakota County. Logging continued until about 1920 although some mills closed because of competition from other localities and technologies such as tractor-drawn logs being hauled to nearby markets for lumbering purposes only instead of being cut down and turned into building blocks by loggers themselves—an event that is commonly referred to as "The Great Timber Robbery" or simply "The Robbery". In 1930, a state highway was constructed through Dakota County bypassing much of Moorhead; this made it easier for residents to get there for work or shopping since automobiles became more widespread then. The rapid growth of suburban areas throughout the 20th century led to development in many directions within 10 miles (16 km) of downtown Moorhead including what are now University Avenue southward and eastward along Interstate 95/Upper Valley Road northward into University Heights which opened up much upscale retail development eastwards before crossing I-95 northbound just past where Union Pacific Railroad tracks currently run parallel to Interstate 95 northeast towards Stillwater Falls where most grocery stores now stand etcetera). However much commercial development took place outside downtown limits during this time frame too so downtown business activity still had a major impact on local social life despite increased suburban development around it). Moorhead is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Mississippi River near its confluence with the Canadian River. Moorhead was founded in 1854 by Norwegian-born landowner John Nordheimer and his family, and has since been a center for education and industry. In 1886, William Ladd purchased 1,500 acres (5 km²) eastside along present-day Uptown Boulevard from Nordheimer for $1 million dollars; this area would eventually become downtown Moorhead. Ladd had originally come to Moorhead to establish an agricultural society he called "Ladd's Land Company".
