In 1851, a group of farmers from Minnesota Territory started the first Methodist church in Moorhead. The town was named after President James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah B. Todd Polk. The first pastor was Rev. John Henson and the first school was established in 1853. In 1865, the town became a city when it was annexed by Minneapolis.
