From here on out, development would take hold in earnest as farmers began moving into this area to cultivate land which had been given away to them by treaty negotiators. The early years were difficult for those who inhabited these parts due to lack of resources and disease epidemics carried over from Native American times. However through hard work and determination, some progress was made in developing this area according to contemporary standards until World War II when things changed completely for Moorheadians then as well as now with regards to their economy and lifestyle; changes that have not returned since then barring brief periods during recessionary times always wiping out any progress made recently or historically (Lerner). Moorhead, Minnesota is a small town in the western Great Lakes region of the United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Moorhead was founded in 1869 as a farmers’ village by Methodist missionaries, and grew rapidly after railroads came through the area in the late 19th century. The town became a major manufacturing center during World War II, with aircraft production and shipbuilding accounting for most of its growth. Today, Moorhead is primarily a bedroom community for Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area residents. The history of Moorhead begins with Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1869 to preach Christianity to Native Americans living near what is now Moorhead. The first settlers were Germans from Nordheim on the east side of the Mississippi River and their families were moved to what is now Moorhead when it was created as a farmers’ village by Reverend Ernest Griesbach and his wife Anna Kiefer Griesbach on April 6, 1869. On October 26, 1870, Gradesboro Township (later named Moorhead) was organized within Ingham County following the Michigan Organic Act which granted township form within counties that ceded their land north of Lake Superior without paying taxes or providing services such as water or schools. At first there were only thirteen settlers in Gradesboro Township; however, over time more colonists arrived including many German Lutherans who had fled religious persecution back home. In early 1871 local businessman Augustus Burt erected an engine factory in downtown Moorhead which soon produced locomotives for various railroad companies throughout southern Minnesota and Iowa; this also helped spur growth around town with many new businesses opening up including a grocery store, bakery/carpet store, hotel/motel (now known as Regions Hotel), post office (1872), doctor’s office (1875), law firm (1876), vehicle dealership (1902) and several restaurants/bars/.
