Monticello is a small town in the state of Minnesota, located on the border of counties Grand Forks and Dakota. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area.
The Monticello scopes company was founded by Orville Fahey in 1904. It became a subsidiary of Bushnell Optical Corporation in 1925. In 1957, Bushnell merged with Leupold & Sons, forming Leupold-Bushnell Corporation. The company continued to manufacture scopes until it went bankrupt in 1990.
Monticello played an important role in early optics history because it was one of the few places where people could purchase sights and telescopes for use outdoors. The first telescopes made from polished brass were erected here in 1868 by Jivan Bhattacharya and Samuel Dickinson, both members of the American Philosophical Society.
In 1905, Orville Fahey imported three Chinese telescope makers named Yuhuan Xing and his son Weiyan Xing from Beijing to establish Monticello Scopes Company as a US based manufacturer of astronomical instruments and observing equipment for use by amateur astronomers around the world.
This began what would be an illustrious production line for astronomical instruments that ran continuously until Bushnell Optical Corporation purchased Leupold & Sons’ microscope division in 1985 (and later reorganized these divisions into two separate companies—Leupold-Bushnell Optics Incorporated (LBOI) and NovaVision Instruments Inc.)).
Bushnell Optical Corporation renamed itself "Leupold-Bushnell" following its acquisition by Bushnell Opticals Incorporated (BHOO) on February 7, 1987; this change lasted until October 1st 1998 when BHOO merged with Dow Corning's Omni® division to form Dow Corning Corp., effective January 1st 1999. In connection with their new corporate identity changes, all products formerly branded as "Leupold-Bushnell Optics" were also rebranded as "Dow Corning Opticals." This effectively ended any remaining connection between these brands.

* LEO Industries LLC which changed its name to simply "Leupold-Bushnell" on November 15th 2003 after being acquired by Seiko Epson Co., Ltd.;
* LEO United States LLC which changed its name to simply "Leupold-Bushnell USA" on March 14th 2006 after being acquired by GizmoCo.,Inc.;

Scope spotting has been a practice used by shooters for centuries to determine the size, shape and other features of various objects. The history of scope spotting can be traced back to at least the fifteenth century when firearms were first used in Europe. In that era, scopes were very expensive and not widely available to the general public. As a result, hunters and military personnel often relied on telescopes or other simple devices to spot game animals. One of the earliest pieces ofScope spotting equipment was a “telescopic microscope” which was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1765. A telescope consisted of two lenses placed so that they could be focused together on an object inside the optics tube. By looking through one lens, one could see all around the object while looking through the other lens, one could only see tiny details within it. This type ofscope became very popular during the eighteenth century because it allowed owners to hunt large game animals such as elephants and lions with greater accuracy than ever before. During World War II, many people who depended on firearms for their livelihood lost their jobs because Telescopic Scopes were banned in America due to wartime regulations. However, this did not stop many individuals from purchasing these telescopes as vintage specimens are still being sold today throughout Asia and Europe. Consequently, Scope Spotters continue to play an important role in firearm shooting today!
