Monticello, Minnesota is a small town in the northcentral part of the United States. It is located on a small peninsula in the Fox River valley, bordering Illinois to the east and Wisconsin to the north. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. The Monticello Rifle Club was formed in 1879 and continues to meet monthly today. The club has been preserving its history by storing firearms and ammunition in an old abandoned farmhouse for safety from theft or vandalism. In early 1896, one of Monticello's first residents, Willard Richard Griggs (1862-1941), built a home on his land known as "Griggs Manor". This manor served as both a shooting ground and residence until 1957 when it was sold to Don Rasmussen (1915-2006). At that time, Don allowed members of the Monticello Rifle Club access to use his property for their meets and shoots during hunting season. Don also donated several acres of his property within walking distance of his home for future public gun ranges. These ranges were eventually christened "Rasmussen Range" after him. Today these ranges are used by community members who visit during hunting season as well as law enforcement officers when necessary due to their location close to Interstate 94/U.S Highway 36 which runs through town center
