Monticello is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Monticello was platted by Scottish settlers in 1857 and named for Montrose, Scotland. The post office was established in 1858 and named Monticello after Mount Rushmore National Monument in Wyoming. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The town straddles the border of two counties: Ramsey County to the north and Scott County to the south. Founded along railroad tracks that crossed near what is now its center, Monticello grew rapidly during World War II as troops sent there for service made their way home on buses and trains from all over Minnesota and Iowa Territory. By 1945, population had reached 2,000 people; by 1960 it had increased to 4,500 people; by 1970 it had reached 7,000 people; by 1990 it had topped 10,000 people. A large number of these new residents were Congregationalists who founded churches such as Stonington Presbyterian Church (1893) or Westminster Presbyterian Church (1901). The population continued to grow through most of the 20th century despite significant competition from secular schools catering to urban students; however, since 2000 growth has been more gradual with a modest increase each year since 2000 births outnumbered deaths within Monticello limits by about 5%. Monticello is a small town in central Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monticello was founded in 1857 by Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Margaret Low. In 1909, Monticello became a city. The town was officially incorporated on November 16, 1912, after being proposed by the Monticello Citizens Association and approved by a vote of 5 to 1. The name comes from Mount Holyoke College (now Wellesley College) which had been located in nearby Hastings since 1848. The college moved to its present location in 1918 and Bell donated land for the school and campus as well as $5,000 for new lights for the college's night sky observatory; these led to the famous "Bell Light Show" which continues every nightfall today at least until 10 pm local time (the last show starts at 8 pm). Monticello has several heritage landmarks including: Mount Holyoke College (founded in 1918), Drury House (a Georgian-style mansion built between 1792 and 1800), Hennepin County Courthouse (built between 1851 and 1856), Stonington Hall (a Gothic Revival style hall built in 1888), Sibley's Mill & Spa Resort & Spa, Old Main Building (from 1927–1929), Averill Park Golf Course (& adjacent reservoir) & Visitors' Center/ gift shop complex featuring amusement park rides such as Mr. Toad's Wild Ride & Scary Train; also features tennis courts, playgrounds, an arena with a capacity of 3,500 spectators - seating for 7,-8,-9 children - ice rink with an artificial water surface; two golf courses: one open to public play all year round while another offers membership privileges only during certain months or years according to club regulations The community post office was established on October 15th 1907 within walking distance of downtown Monticello and served residents until it closed on January 6th 1959 due to budget cuts made during President Dwight D Eisenhower's administration.; however mail continued be sent through Hastings post office until that date Monticellolandia is a quarterly print magazine serving residents of Monticello township only
