Monticello is a small town in rural southwestern Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Forks–Hennepin County metropolitan area. Monticello was founded by settlers in 1854, and became a incorporated community in 1909. The Monticello School District was first formed in 1925, and Monticello Elementary School opened its doors in 1927. The community has been home to many different businesses and residents over the years, but its most notable landmark has been its historic district which consists of over 20 buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Since Monticello's incorporation as a village, it has experienced several changes including annexation by Hennepin County in 1966 and later by Grand Forks Township in 1998. The name "Monticello" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where deer feed." In 1853 surveyor John Laughlin traveled through this area and noted that there were no deer on any of his Native American reservations other than the one he owned near present-day Hibbing. He found evidence that earlier French traders had hunted here for centuries before being driven out by the Sioux during the early 19th century. Consequently, when white men arrived in these parts during the mid-19th century they discovered large herds of wild game including bison and buffalo roam across what are now northeastern Minnesota and southeastern Wisconsin today; these animals were very difficult to hunt because they were so big and fast. In 1854 two brothers named James Prentice bought land adjacent to their father's farmstead north of downtown Hibbing on what is now Sargent Street (now Main Street). James Prentice developed what would become Monticello into a small town with his own store and home soon after its founding; he also built a schoolhouse which served as both a public school for students living within 500 feet (150 m) of him as well as private primary & secondary schools for those farther away until 1909 when it became an elementary school again under auspices of the Monticello School District #2 following consolidation between Hennepin Countyand Grand Forks Township due primarily to overcrowding within Hennepin County Public Schools at that time%.
