Monticello was founded in 1854 by German immigrants, and has been an agricultural community since then. The Monticello post office was established in 1881. The Monticello School Districtwas formed in 1923 and covers all of Hennepin County; it currently has a enrollment of 3,000 students. The first settler to arrive in what is now Monticello were Friedrich Wilhelm Kapp and his family on January 1, 1854. Kapp had come from Bayern, Germany with his father and two sisters to settle near Clearwater on the Mississippi River northeast of St Louis Park. The second settler also arrived that day: Johann Gottlieb Fertig from Bavaria who owned land just east of present-day Monticello along the current site of University Avenue and Constitution Street (now US-2). In 1865 John Masterman from Maine bought some land adjacent to where Fertig's farm still stands on present day Maplewood Avenue near University Avenue southwest of town limits (now I-35W). He named his property "MontICELLO" after himself and four others who had accompanied him when he took possession; these were John Ladd (1824–1912), James Mapes (1825–1920), George Stephenson (1792–1864) and Samuel Morse (1795–1837). The first school opened in MontICELLO on December 17th, 1881 by Drs Wm Sibley & Geo Prentice with 7 pupils under instruction by Mr Foley{sic}. After one year operated out of a log cabin there Mrs Sibley moved into her own house which she built next door using lumber brought overland by wagonloads over winter months {that same year}. On October 6th 1882 Rev Wm Sibley set up a Methodist Church here {this building still stands today} which he performed services inside until 1886 when he got permission from the state Legislature to build a larger church outside town limits at what is now downtown Saint Paul due to financial difficulties faced by his earlier efforts {it didn't open until 1893}; this church still serves as its administrative headquarters today. In 1925 Hennepin County Agricultural District was organized with its new name "MontICELLO School District". This district included much of rural Hennepin County north of Interstate 35W as well as portions including parts of Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie located within Minneapolis city limits; all student enrollments were centralized within this new entity providing for better coordination between schools having closer proximity to industry or businesses while maintaining close relationships with parents/guardians etc., resulting in an overall increase(s) in instructional opportunities for students across all districts within county boundaries{?!}. In 1975, the district purchased an adjacent building which served as its new headquarters until 2013 when it moved into its current facility on First Avenue North. In 2006, Monticello was designated as a National Heritage Site by President George W Bush; this designation included provisions for increased cultural awareness within the community as well as protection of its unique resources such as history-based businesses and homes (which are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places). Today, Monticello continues to experience growth due to its location near many major highways – both Interstate 35W and Interstate 95 – making it easy access for people from all over metro Minnesota.
