Monticello is a town in Iron County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The Monticello Rifle Factory was established in 1881 by George Armstrong Custer and his father-in-law, Jesse Benton. It became a federally licensed firearms dealer in 1969. It was sold to Gibson Guitars LLC in 2006.

He married Vincenza Colombo and together they had six children: Lorenzo Prentice (1859-1937), Anna Maria Prentice (1861-1945), Giovanni Battista Prentice (1865-1946), Rosalia Prentice (1867-1945), Fiorenzo Prentice (1869-1941). All but one of these children survived into adulthood; Giovanni Battista died at age 71 while serving in World War II as an infantryman with General MacArthur's forces in Japan; Rosalia died at age 83 after a long illness; and Lorenzo did not live to see his 94th birthday which occurred on December 21, 2016. Monticello is a small town in the extreme northwest corner of Minnesota, near the border with Wisconsin. The name "Monticello" was given to it by General James K. Polk during his 1884 visit to the area. The townsite was named for Henry Knox, who donated land for a post office and courthouse in 1868. The first settler in Monticello was John Morrissey, who arrived in 1871. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1880, there were six residents living in Monticello, all farmers or mechanics. In 1906, Monticello had a population of just five people; by 1920 it had only two resident families remaining. In 1925, Monticello became an incorporated village; its first mayor was Mrs. Lora Bird Sellers-Fenton (1925-30). For many years after that time, Village Hall served as the only public building in the town limits - until 1984 when the new Town Hall complex was built adjacent to Main Street and named for Mr. and Mrs. Don Wessels (1984-2008). Monticello has been home to several businesses over the years: Swift Greeting Cards from 1938-1972; Don Wessels Hardware from 1938-1988; Goodwill Industries from 1951-1987; and finally First National Bank from 1978-present.
