In fact, one of Roy's sons became a successful farmer himself later on! In 1916, Roy passed away and his son took over running the farm until he died in 1951. It is located on the eastern edge of the state and is bordered by the states of Iowa and Wisconsin to the north, Illinois to the south, and North Dakota to the east. The population of Monticello was 1,812 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in what would become Monticello were German immigrants who arrived in 1854. The town was named after Mount Climbing Hill, a mountain near Dresden, Germany. In 1872, Monticello began to grow as a result of an increased demand for lumber in nearby towns such as Duluth and Minneapolis. The town's growth continued until it had a population of 5,000 by 1910. During World War II, Monticello played an important role in supporting American forces during the war effort. On July 6th 1944, during World War II's "Battle ofthe Bulge," Monticello natives helped support U.S. military efforts against Nazi Germany by providing food and supplies to soldiers stationed there. In 1955, Monticello became part of Hennepin County when it was established as a county seat for the new countywide government structure created after Minnesota’s admission into the Union as a United States State on December 12th through 15th of that year (see History Timeline: 1955). With its current boundaries formed following statehood changes withinMinnesota in 1998 (See History Timeline: 1998), Monticello once again falls within Hennepin County but with its own governmental framework which includes both local elected officials (which are currently held by Mayor Mike Richards) as well as county-wide services provided by sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement officers on call 24/7 365 days/year/including weekends/holidays).
Monticello was first settled in 1865 by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The town grew quickly and by 1881, it had a brick school, library, Masonic Lodge and several businesses. In 1907, the town built its first post office. By 1916, Monticello had a population of about 130 people. In 1925, the town bought land from the federal government for $5 per acre and began to build a dam on the Nicollet River. The dam was completed in 1929 and provided water for the town until it was replaced by the present-day Monticello Dam in 2006.
