Monticello is a city in and the county seat of Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 14,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Monticello was founded by Danish immigrants in 1854 as a small community on an east-west trading post known as "Moses Prairie." In 1875, the town became a city when it incorporated under the name of Minneapolis. When Minneapolis-Saint Paul annexed Monticello in 1901, the new city added its own cemetery to that of the old city. The first settler who arrived in what is now Monticello Township was Ole Hanson in 1855; he and his family established a log cabin near present day West Seventh Street and First Avenue. The town's first school was built in 1856; it served only students from neighboring towns until1876 when it moved to its current location on First Avenue west of South Second Street. In 1865, John Averill erected one of America's most famous commercial buildings: The Robinson House or Averill Hotel which still stands today as a popular tourist attraction just south of downtown Minneapolis. One hundred years later, this building played an important role in shaping modern day Monticello into an indisputable cultural center for Ramsey County residents and visitors alike
