Monticello Ammunition Manufacturing Company was founded in 1887 by James W. “Jim” Monticello and his brother, David. The company manufactured ammunition for the Minnesota National Guard and other military organizations. Ammunition products include field artillery shells, automatic pistols, rifles and shotguns. In 1912, Jim Monticello passed away and his son-in-law, John Hagan took over the business. John Hagan served as president of the company from 1951 to 1970. The company closed its doors in 1971 after production of munitions decreased due to a variety of economic factors. Ammunition manufacturing resumed in 2002 when a new plant was built in Monticello Township. The old plant is now used for storage purposes only.

The name of the town comes from Monticello, Virginia, which was once part of the Dakota Territory and is now part of North Dakota. The first settler in what would become Monticello was John Aitken in 1855. A post office called "Aitken" was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1886. The present spelling of Monticello began to be used in 1915 when postmaster Wm. Kline moved to Monticello from Hastings County, Minnesota. In that year, he changed the spelling to its current form after learning about an error made by anotherpostmaster who had spelled "Montickel" as "Muncicle." According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 463 people residing in the town. Of these 508 lived in single-family homes and 26 lived in buildings with more than one story). Of all households 28% were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years or older; they were all under age 18 though 5% were over age 80. Asian Americans constituted 12% of the population but 25%of all households and 14%of all housing units reported this composition

Monticello is a small town in Minnesota, located just east of Minneapolis. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. Monticello was founded in 1867 by Norwegian immigrants and named after Montresor, the old home of Governor Isaac Nissenbaum. The first settler in what is now Monticello was George Akeley, who arrived in 1868. Akeley operated a small tavern called the Blue Lakes Tavern for a few years before starting to farm land. In 1874, he married Eliza Ladd and started a family. Over time, other settlers followed suit and much of what is now Monticello was developed as farmland around this time. In 1912, Monticello became an incorporated village with a population of 712 people. In 1974, it united with nearby Highland Park to form the city of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The growth of the city led to increased demand for services and infrastructure in both towns; including new schools and hospitals which were built respectively on top of older agricultural land within those two cities (Monticello would annex Highland Park following its incorporation). Today, there are still many residents from when Monticello was established who maintain close ties to their childhood home or hometowns across the state border in neighboring rural Minnesotas (like Maplewood) or Downers Grove (in Chicago). Many businesses also operate out of either town due to its close proximity to each other as well as its shared cultural experiences (Monticellans love visiting downtown Minneapolis-Saint Paul).
