The town of Minnetonka was founded in 1851 by the traders and bankers John S. Wright and Isaac Chisholm. The town grew rapidly, and within a few years had a population of over 100 people. By 1870, the town had acquired its own jail and post office. In 1875, Minnetonka became the state capital of Minnesota. In 1896, Minnetonka was renamed after Dr. George Wernick, who served as president of the University of Minnesota from 1893 to 1902 and also helped found the Minneapolis-St Paul Hospital in 1892. In 1938, Dr. George Wernick's home was designated a National Historic Landmark in recognition of his contributions to American education and culture. Today, Minnetonka is a small community with a strong sense of community values that has played an important role in local politics for more than 150 years.
