Minnetonka is a small town in the Minnesota Valley, located in Polk County. The community was founded by Norwegian Vikings in 1853. As of the 2000 census, Minnetonka had a population of 173. The first settler in Minnetonka was Ole Christensen, who arrived with his family from Nesbygd on November 15, 1853. At that time, the area included present day Minneapolis and St Paul. Christensen built a log cabin on an eastward-facing bluff overlooking Clearwater Creek. He named his new settlement after his home village in Norway—Nesbygd—though he never set foot there himself. The Andersons also settled here at some point before 1854; they were later joined by others until the early 1870s when all but four of the original settlers had died from tuberculosis or other illnesses brought over with their migration westward to seek new opportunities. In 1857, John Aaslandt erected a sawmill on Clearwater Creek for local processing of lumber and other woodproducts used by farmers and ranchers near what is now downtown Minnetonka. By 1860, Minnetonka had three stores (one open only during Advent), two schools (grades 1-3), a Methodist church (built in 1861), and a post office (established December 5). In 1865–1866, local fur trader Peder Olsen established a ranch northwest of town where he raised beef and hides for export to Scandinavia and England; he also built several houses and outbuildings there. The townsite name honors Olson's father-in-law Einar Hauge (1823–1900). In 1871–72, residents voted to build a public school within the limits of town; this became known as "Stations School" because it served all residents regardless of educational level or farm experience. The first teacher was Mrs Lillie Rasmussen (1861–1937). Classes began September 25th, 1871; enrollment reached 23 students by May 12th of that year! Over the next few yearsructional costs mounted as more buildings were needed: an addition to school was made possible through private donations which totaled $1,000 (). By 1922 classes were conducted morning and evening until 7 p.m., thanks to financial support from members of the Masonic Lodge #2A.( ) On July 6th, 1908 an ice storm struck northeastern Minnesota killing nine people including six children playing outside their house on Lake George shoreline just north of Minnetonka Landing Site National Historical Park - one mile northeast from present day Highway 169 exit off I-5W just south of MN State University campus boundary line between Ramsey County & Polk County Following World War II many families moved away due to harsh winters although many residents still live close enough to visit during summer months
