Minnetonka, Minnesota is a town located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The population was 9,741 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The city of Bloomington is to the north and west and St. Cloud is to the east. The first Europeans to visit Minnetonka were fur traders who traveled through what is now Hennepin County in 1814-1815. They named their location after a small stream that flowed through the area, Minnetonka Creek. At that time, there were no villages or towns in this part ofMinnesota and people relied on hunting and fishing for their food supply as well as gathering wild plants and berries for trade with other Native American groups. In 1872, John Jacob Astor founded the National City Bank in Minneapolis which became one of the largest commercial banks in America. He also purchased land near Minnetonka creek which he donated to build his own town called Astoria on it's site (the name "Astoria" comes from an early French trading post). By 1876, Minnetonka had a population of around 100 residents and was home to several stores, a Methodist church and school district as well as two churches: First Presbyterian Church and Second Presbyterian Church (now known as Saint Anthony Catholic Cathedral). In 1886, A&P grocery store opened its doors in downtown Minnetonka - becoming one of the earliest grocery stores in America In 1916 when World War I began, many farmers started moving into what is now Hennepin County because they found new markets for their crops online thanks to new technology called radio broadcasting . One resident from Minnetonka named Harry Smith set up a short wave station called KFLL-AM which broadcast news programming from Minneapolis until 1951 . On July 6th 1920 local farmer Harry Wiebe erected a 50 foot tall tower symbolizing democracy during a commemorative event at his farmstead dedicated to democracy symbols around town including a model Ulysses S Grant house on North Maple Avenue; three Dakota stars above Superior Street; Model T’s parked along North Maple Avenue; four Ku Klux Klan signs outside Wiebe’s store; six watermelons grown by Mrs. Wiebe on her property; an American flag flying from nearby Grosse Pointe Park

On July 12, 1858, a group of settlers fromMinnesota founded the town of Minnetonka. The name was chosen to honor the then-new county seat of Dakota Territory, hearing that residents in this small community were working hard to build a new home. The town's first settler, Isaac Severson, arrived in 1859 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1860, the population had increased to thirteen and by 1862, it had grown to thirty-six. The early years of Minnetonka were difficult for both its residents and its fledgling town government. One problem was that there was little money available to fund public projects such as infrastructure or education. Another issue was that not many people wanted to live in an agricultural region with limited resources. However, over time, Minnetonka began to grow into one of the most successful communities in Minnesota. By 1870, it boasted a population of seventy-five and by 1876 it had reached one hundred fifty-one people. It wasn't until 1889 when the city limits were established that Minnetonka truly came into its own as a cultural center for central Minnesota. During World War II, Minnetonka played an important role in helping Allied forces reach North America through theirOperation Overlord campaign. In 1945, following the war's end, the city experienced another growth spurt with everyone coming back intotown after having fled during wartime events across Europe and Asia .
