Minnetonka is a village in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Finnish word "minta", meaning "hill" or "mountain". The first settlers arrived in 1871 and named their village after Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Village of Minnetonka formed on December 10, 1907 when the boundaries of Hennepin and Ramsey counties were redrawn. It was incorporated on February 14, 1912. The original plat for the Village of Minnetonka showed a small square within its borders with two houses on each side and one large house to the rear. Three years later it had evolved into a Township with its ownoroughs-Hennepin Township to the north and east, Maplewood Township to the south and west (the area now known as Forest Lake), and parts of Ramsey County to the northwest. On July 1, 1916 Minnetonka became an incorporated city when all of Hennepin County united under one government under Mayor James Murchison. On November 3rd 1918 Stenhouse Park was dedicated as the site for what would become home to many famous people over time including Woodrow Wilson who delivered his speech from there on November 8th 1918 while riding his horse 'Wild Bill' across America's capital city
The first recorded mention of Minnetonka was in 1838 when the town was discovered by James P. Wright and his party on their way from St. Paul to Winnipeg. The name means "big place" in Dakota, and the original settlers were farmers who grew maize, beans, pumpkins, potatoes and other vegetables. In 1851 the railroad arrived in Minnetonka and started passenger service. The community began to grow as people came to work on the railway. In 1916 the school district was formed and Minnetonka became a part of it. In 1950 the first hospital opened in Minnetonka.
