In the early 1800s, Minnetonka was a busy farming community. People in the area used guns to protect themselves and their properties from raiders. At one point, there were over 20 gun sights in the town. Some of these sights still remain in use today. One of the earliest gun sights in Minnetonka was located on Birch Street. This sight was built by George Howells in 1814. It consisted of a post with a swivel arm at one end and an eye at the other, used to aim firearms at targets closeby. Another early gun Sight on Birch Street was built by John Doherty in 1837. This sight consisted of three circles that were positioned around a blacksmith’s shop, used to aim firearms at passing cars or people walking down the street. In 1853, James Joicey erected agunsight on Third Street near his grocery store. This sight consisted of two posts with crossarms each and an eye above it, used to aim rifles at passing trains or horses grazing on the property next door. By 1870, Minnetonka had acquired its own Municipal arsenal which housed 11 weapons including six shotguns and four pistols (two revolvers and two handguns). The arsenal also contained 12 muskets and six cannons dating back to 1796 when Aaron Burr purchased them from Captain Cook for $1,500 cash! At this time, Minneapolis had only just become a city; so much remained unchanged about life hereabouts that visitors exclaim “How strange it is that amongst all this bustle and change new things are constantly happening without our learning anything about them!” We can only imagine how differently things would have been if these old Gunsights hadn’t gone out of business…or maybe they just got smarter? Today, most businesses within walking distance of downtown are related to agriculture: farms/grazing operations, wineries/cellars, grocery stores/cafes/diner chains etc., though some have since closed down or gone out of business due to changing economic trends or competition from larger stores in neighboring cities or towns.
