Minnetonka is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. The name means "little mountain" in Finnish. Minnetonka is about 12 miles west of Minneapolis and 11 miles east of St. Paul. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The community was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1884 and named after Nansen's birthplace, Modane, on an important fork in the River Elmo near present-day Innsbruck, Austria. The first post office in Minnetonka was established on November 17, 1884. By 1915 it had been renamed for General Nelson Aitken MacArthur after his victory at Iwo Jima over Japan's Imperial Japanese Navy Fleet on that island during World War II (the Battle of Iwo Jima). The community changed its name yet again to Minnetonka on February 2, 1951 when it became a city within the newly created Ramsey County government with a population exceeding 100,000 residents. After more than 50 years as a rural municipality located just outside of Minneapolis proper and serving mostly agriculture and small businesses around the southern edge of town limits—including those between Snelling Avenue and Dakota Road—the City Council proclaimed that “ Municipality” would be their new legal name for all residential developments inside city limits since this change would take effect without referendum or council action; thus starting what has come to be known as the “City NameChange Era” which continues to this day (as opposed to eitherMN or MN+). Today’s downtown core housing most prominently high-end apartments overlooking Lake Como while smaller neighborhoods are located north and east along Snelling Avenue which runs through town center flanked by shopping centers including Macy’s Department Store (opened 1905), Sears & Roebuck (1925), JCPenney (1968) anchored by US Cellular Center since 2007—all within walking distance not only of one another but also various other amenities such as golf coursesminnow fishing ponds numerous parks including Edina Park Zoo & Botanical Gardens as well as several professional sports teams includingMinnesota Vikings/NFL football team(since 1961), Hockeytown USA Hockey team(from 1966–present) among others making Minnetonka one highly livable community notwithstanding some relatively limited services available locally such as public transportation

Minnetonka is a small town in the US state of Minnesota. It is located on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, about 25 miles south of Minneapolis and 20 miles north of St. Paul. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. The name "Minnetonka" comes from two Finnish words, minkälaista ("what kind of wood") and toonen ("place"). The first settler in what is now Minnetonka was Peter Olson in 1836. He named his farm after his friend, Isak Lassen, who had settled near present-day Rochester, Minnesota in 1824. In 1851, John Doherty moved to Minnetonka from Illinois and platted it on land that he had purchased from the Chippewa nation. At that time there were no towns or villages in centralMinnesota; each family developed their own property around their home farmsteads. In 1865, when Andrew Denny surveyed and patented land for a railroad station at what is now Park Rapids Junction on the Missouri River east of Minneapolis, he included an ad for cattle drives through his plat for $1 per head (about $40 today). This stimulated settlement by farmers along the proposed route of the railway. When construction began on the railway in 1867, many farmers took advantage of itsavailability to move their herds away from Twin Cities farms into new homesteads west of MINNETONKA! Today's downtown area was built up mostly during World War II as a result of military housing erected by American soldiers stationed here during both world wars – most notably Fort Snelling barracks which served as a training center for pilots/combat engineers/tank drivers etc.; also Storey Barracks which housed officers’ quarters; also several stores and other commercial buildings used by troops here during both world wars including: Western Hardware Company Building (now part of Target), JCPenney store (now Sears), Kress Drugs store (now CVS), Barnes & Noble building (Now Macy’s)………the list goes on!
