The first settlers in what is now Minnetonka were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1857. The name " Minnetonka" comes from the Dakota word "mni", meaning 'meadow'. A post office was established in 1876 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1939. In 1905, a group of farmers led by John Waddell began to raise horses on their farmsteads around what is now North Park Road and West Lake Avenue. In 1912 they donated land to the city of Minneapolis for a public park that would include an arena and tennis courts. That same year, Minnetonka's first library opened its doors with books from the Minneapolis Public Library system. In 1924, school trustees voted to close North Park School for lack of pupil enrollment; however, this decision was overturned by a popular referendum which saw Minnetonka become one of only four towns in Minnesota (the others being Rochester Hills, Maple Hill and St Cloud) to continue having public schools after World War II ended without any new construction taking place on their campuses since then! In 1951 when Interstate 94 was built through Polk County, Minnetonka had already grown sufficiently large that it became necessary for a bypass road to be built just east of its center – what are today known as Plymouth Drive and South Boulevard - so traffic could move quickly past rural communities onto I-94 without stopping or delaying motorists unnecessarily. This bypass road still exists today as Highway 852 (formerly US 71). A lakeshore community sprang up around Maryville beach near where present day North Park Road meets South Boulevard during the 1950s; this community eventually became known as Maplewood while North Park Road remains unchanged today as its original nameakesake Boulevard
In 1854, the first post office in Minnetonka was established. The town was named for John N. Morris, an early settler and farmer in the area. In 1858, the town had a population of just 10 people. By 1860, it had grown to around 150 people and became a small village. In 1871, Minnetonka incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth. By 1909, it had reached its peak with a population of over 1,500 residents. However, by World War I they were all but gone with only 100 residents remaining by 1920. After the war ended, the city struggled to maintain its size and popularity as businesses closed down or moved out of town while crime increased until it lost most of its resident population after the Korean War brought economic prosperity to the community. However in recent years there has been some resurgence with new development being erected in Minnetonka including an NHL team (Minnesota Wild) and several restaurants and bars which have helped fuel local economy while also attracting attention from tourists who often enjoy activities such as swimming or hiking within minutes' walk from downtownMinnetonka
