Minnetonka, Minnesota is a small town in the St. Louis County region of Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,574 at the 2010 census and 6,539 at the 2015 estimate. Minnetonka is located on Lake Minnetonka and is bordered by Minneapolis to the east and south, Apple Valley to the west, White Bear Lake to the northwest, and Rockford to the north. It forms part of Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Minnetonka was first settled by Finnish immigrants in 1857. The name means "big water" in their language. The post office was established in 1858 and named for Admiral Carl Gustaf Armfelt who had commanded a Swedish squadron which assisted American forces during the Indian War of 1812. During World War II, many people from northern Minnesota came to work on Army Air Forces bases in Southern California or Japan. When America entered World War II again in 1941, this time with an all-American army under General Douglas MacArthur (later Supreme Commander), Minnetonka's residents were called upon once again to help defend their community against Japanese aggression. In 1945, when Japan surrendered unconditionally after its atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (the two largest cities in Japan), much of what is now Minnetonka was still within enemy lines; however most citizens left quickly before any fighting broke out as there was no fear that they would be drafted into service as Japanese troops did not yet exist locally beyond small towns such as theirs

In 1854, the first settlers in what is now Minnetonka arrived. George and Lilla Stevens started a small farm on the east side of town. The Stevens family continued to live in their farm until 1959. In that year, they sold it and moved to the west side of town.
