They named their farm “Wiegand” after their father and brother, Wilhelm Wiegand (1814-1892). In 1881, they sold their farm to John Atherton for $2 per acre which he used to build his mansion known as “Atherton Place” today’s Atherton Park neighborhood east of downtown Minnetonka on Lake Street between Third and Fourth avenues NE [now State Highway 62]. Mr. Atherton also donated land west of town to be developed into an open air shopping mall known as Century Park which opened October 1st 1909.] During World War II, Minnetonka played host to several military units including the Eighth Air Force Headquarters (HQ) No 4 Fighter Wing stationed here from 1944-1945; HQ USAAF Ninth Air Force during 1945]; HQ First Army Theaterof Operations (TAO) Europe before its redeployment back to United States soil in 1946; HQ Seventh Army during 1947] In 1948 Drury College opened its doors with Classes starting September 15th followed by Addison Academy May 6th through October 15th] On November 15th 1949 school ended with Christmas break while crews prepared for nuclear testing at Pequod Point Naval Shipyard ]. After test results were announced revealing no danger from nuclear tests instituted classes resumed January 14th 1950 ] After one year without any new admissions students increased application rates resulted in opening up four new classrooms February 17th 1951 ]. By this time Enrollment reached 2144 students ], but endowment had only slight increase over fund balance . With few opportunities available for further growth headmaster decided against enlarging school adding another wing ] So finally closed down December 31st 1957 ].
