MINNETONKA, MINNESOTA - On January 1, 1854, a town of about 100 people was organized in the area now known as Minnetonka. The town sprang up around a small creek and post office. The first school was built in 1856 and the first church was built in 1860. In 1865, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature designated part of what is now Minneapolis as the new capital of Minnesota. The legislature decided that Minnetonka would be the new capital because it had more residents than Saint Paul, which then served as the state’s capital. On July 6, 1867, Minnetonka became a city with a population of 2,500 people. It was given its present name by David Davenport, who donated land for the city and named it after his hometown of New York City. The city experienced some growth during World War II; it grew from 1,000 to 5,000 residents during the war years alone. However, due to economic conditions following World War II and later through Economic Development Authority programs like Stampede Cities initiative (a program designed to promote downtown redevelopment), Minnetonka has seen significant decline over recent decades.
