The town of Minnetonka was founded on July 24th,1886 when two businessmen named John Healey and Fred Hennepin bought land on what are now Warm Springs Road and Superior Avenue in what is now south central Minnetonka Township. They set up a store called Healey Bros./Hennepin's Store which became one of the early commercial successes in the community. During World War II many people who were living in or near Minnetonka served in various roles within the military including service as cooks, drivers, mechanics etc…. Many residents also took part in agricultural production such as growing corn, haystack apples or harvesting strawberries during summertime during prohibition era years

The town began to grow rapidly in the early 19th century as people flocked to find rich mining claims in what would become known as Minnetonka Township. By 1870, most of what is now Minnetonka had been built and by 1887, there were over 100 businesses in town. In 1912, residents voted to secede from Minnesota and form a new state called Dakota Territory. However, this plan was defeated byMinnesota National Guard soldiers under General John Ahern during the Red River War of 1912-1913. In 1916, construction began on a dam across Clearwater Creek which wouldlater be renamed Lake O’Neill following an Agreement between then-Governor Morris Ivey and local business interests led by banker Harry Payne Whitney (1854-1924). This project created one ofthe largest lakes ever constructed in America due to its size – measuring 328 acres (130 hectares) at its maximum width × 520 acres (220 hectares) at its deepest point – making it larger than any other American lake until Glen Canyon Lake was completed 14 years later. After years of planning and construction frenzy,the dam was finally finished on July 16th, 1928; three days shy of his death anniversary! The effect onMinnetonka was catastrophic: entire neighborhoods downstream lost access to water for up to two months while workers building atop the now ruined dam erected huge pens high enough for cows and horses to drink from;and more importantly it created an artificial lake that completely changed courseof Clearwater Creek so that it emptied into Superior Bay instead of Into MINNETONKA CREEK! This event has long been overshadowed by subsequent controversies surroundingthe lake - including allegations that developers deliberately flooded parts oftowns with polluted water in orderto create an eerie “ghost town” appearance;that heavy industry continued unabated despite all these problems;and finallymost notably, suggestions that powerful friends or family members may have had somethingto do with Governor Jesse Ventura's election victory four years later! Despite all these issues however, Minnetonka still retains a sense of community pride& history which makes it an interesting place to visit regardless of your personal feelings aboutdevelopments around the area prior thereto .

After World War II, the town declined rapidly due to lack of jobs and population growth elsewhere. Today, most of the original settlers have passed away and Minnetonka is little more than a small ghost town.
