One major reason that downtown Minneapolis declined during its heyday was because many businesses moved to relatively new suburban neighborhoods outside of town between 1945 and 1965 due to high housing costs and limited access to public transportation (the first subway line opened in 1955). However, Downtown's resurgence has happened recently thanks to a blend of redevelopment projects such as Target Center – home stadium for MLS' MNUFC since 1999 – Midtown Eastside Business District redevelopment project which includes anchor stores Macy’s & Sears anchors along Nicollet Mall (2002), One North light rail station opening adjacent to Millennium Park (2005) – these developments have brought new life back into Pioneer Square Station near University Ave., creating an outdoor mall with over 100 stores including Macy’s & Sears anchors
The city of Minneapolis was founded on April 15, 1858, by the United States government in honor of Ulysses S. Grant. The city grew rapidly and soon became one of the most important cities in Minnesota. Minneapolis became a state capital in 1912, and made history when it became the first city to be governed by a commission composed exclusively of white citizens. In 1924, Minneapolis was renamed for Dr. John Hennepin, who had fought against Native American slavery and helped to end that practice in Minnesota.
