In 1862, when Minnesota joined Union during the American Civil War based on slavery versus freedom under Democratic Party candidate Abraham Lincoln,NAE namedMNHS' new Army Ammunition Depot "Fort Snelling". On January 1st 1870 due to concerns about inadequate water supplies caused by floods three years earlier following severe winters that destroyed crops statewide including all but two farms within five miles of MNHSA HQ I Corps troops arrived with artillery pieces drawn up outside MNHQ for daily practice loading & unloading rounds from cannons onto wagons transporting them back into camp each nightfall then driving them back out each morning dawning weather permitting so that no soldiers fell asleep while being fired upon by friendly Indians who lived nearby; fortifications were increased threefold: parapets were added around main inside buildings plus an extensive moat completed beach style ditches encircling entire complex w/an extensive system of underground tunnels used later for storage/fire protection

On July 7, 1858, the first wagon train of American settlers arrived in Minneapolis. The town was founded on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, and early pioneers erected log cabins and began to cultivate land. In 1871, Minneapolis became the seat of government for Minnesota. On May 15, 1895, it was incorporated as a city by an act of the Minnesota Legislature. The city experienced dramatic growth in the late 19th century as immigrants from Russia, Germany and other parts of Europe came to work in railroad yards and mills; many new homes were built in downtown areas. Minneapolis became known for its nightlife (the first major U.S. city to do so), its popular music scene (especially during Prohibition) and its liberal political views. Streets were named after famous people or events such as Hennepin Avenue for Josephine Baker or Nicollet Mall for Woodrow Wilson. In 1966, Minneapolis was established as a state capital; however, it reverted back to its original name on Decatur Street within two years due to local dissatisfaction with that location. In 1992–1993, following the collapse of the Twin Cities housing market caused by recessionary forces throughout North America,[5] Minneapolis underwent an extensive renovation which included numerous new buildings and public art installations.[6] The renovated district is now called Midtown/Hightown MN., home to some of the most modern architecture in town[7]
