Mendota Heights is a town in Houston County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 231 at the 2010 census. Mendota Heights is located on the east side of Houston County, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Minneapolis. Mendota Heights was platted in 1885. The name honors General George Armstrong Custer. It has been spelled "Mendon" since 1907. The first settler in Mendota Heights was John Smith who arrived in 1887. Other early settlers were Wm Hafer and his family, Isaac Beiler and wife Zella Beiler, Lewis Burt and family, Geo Mauer and his family and John Sutherlin with families from Sweden who had settled around 1854 near what is now Plymouth Junction on the Canadian border. In 1886 the general store (now Mendota Heights Lutheran Church) was built by Jno Erikson and it remains one of the town's most popular attractions today. The first post office in Mendota Heights was established in 1888, but it closed operations within a year because of low mail traffic. The current post office opened on December 1, 1895; it remained open until its closure in 1998 amid budget cuts by then-Governor Jesse Ventura's administration. In 1902 Bendigo Minerals Company conducted an extensive gold exploration under license from US Geological Survey director Walter Pogue in what would become known as Gold Rush Minnesota Territory; this laid the groundwork for later mining discoveries at nearby Golden Valley and Anoka County by both American Mining Company (AMC) and Swedish Mines Syndicate (SMS). In 1905 John Flemming founded KFJ Radio Corporation which became one of America's leading radio broadcasters before folding into CBS Corporation effective May 15th 1958; KFJ Radio still operates as a web-based streaming radio station primarily serving rural areas across northeastern MinnesotaToday with over 100 FM & AM stations statewide

The first European to visit Mendota Heights was Captain James Cook on July 24, 1770 while exploring the Pacific Ocean off the coast of North America. Cook anchored his ship near what is now downtown Mendota Heights and made landfall on July 26th as he sailed past today's Mendota Heights Pier. Mendota Heights was founded in 1881 by railroad men who were looking for a place to build their new line between Duluth and Minneapolis. The town name comes from "mendon" meaning "oak." In 1902, Mendota Heights lost its post office and ZIP code when the Twin Cities were divided into five municipalities: Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Bloomington-Normal, Apple Valley, Plymouth Township (now Maplewood), and Mendota Heights amalgamated with Normal as one city under the name of “Minneapolis”. In 1960, after more than 50 years without an elementary school in Mendota Heights – until that year there had been only high schools – local citizens rallied to create a new elementary school called “Hillsboro” which opened its doors on September 5th that same year; it became one of fourElementary Schools within Minneapolis-St Paul School District #2A serving all students within walking distance from home including those living outside of central Minneapolis or St Paul proper! Hillsboro Elementary School has continued to serve as our community center & cultural hub ever since! On November 4th 2013 we celebrated our centennial!!Over this century we have seen many changes take place in this great City like: building homes for families during WWII due to lack of affordable housing then becoming Metro Area 9% Black & Hispanic owned businesses started throughout these decades just like most places but somehow still stuck around thru tough times until now where we continue to grow with some amazing people that are willing to help us achieve anything we want/need!
