In 1872, US Army General George Armstrong Custer traveled through Dakota Territory and stopped at Fort Snelling for supplies before continuing his journey to California via buffalo crossing over the Minnesota border into Canada. While at Fort Snelling, he ordered Sixth Cavalry Regiment Captain Nathaniel Pullen to search for any sign localSioux were planning to attack him while he was on his way southward towards Bismarck with 1,200 cavalry troopers under his command-a mission that never took place because no suchsigns were found. Mendoha High School opened its doors on September 9th 1950 after years campaigning from Mrs . Addie Welch.
Mrs Welch had lobbied tirelessly since she moved into her house on South Parkway across from the high school four years earlier.
A group led by Mrs Welch raised enough money through bake sales, car wash drives etcetera TO BUY THE SCHOOL! The building that stands today along South Parkwaybetween Westpark Avenueand Interstate 35was erected using donated materials AND $6000 FROM THE GENERAL FUND OF MENDOTA HILLS PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT INC.. ROAD NAME WAS APPLIED AFTER MRS WELCH'S INVESTIGATIVE STRUCK ONCE AGAIN THAT IT WAS NAMED IN REMEMBERSHIP OF HER ARRIVING MASTERPIECE............................THE GARDEN NEARBY IS ALSO BELONGING TO THE WILKINS FAMILY TODAY.

Today’s school building was originally constructed with classrooms upstairs onto an original barnyard providing office space downstairs along with several playground areas plus an arena suitable for sports events.
