Mendota Heights is a small town in eastern Minnesota, United States. The population was 986 at the 2010 census. Mendota Heights is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is located just east of I-35W on the southern edge of Interstate 35E. Mendota Heights was founded in 1881 by John Fenton and his family as a farming community about six miles (10 km) northeast of where Minneapolis now stands. The name means "a stand for corn" in Dakota, and Fenton's mother had come from this region when she married Fenton's father. Fenton began trading goods with Sioux City, Iowa, and it was there that he first learned to grow crops from weathering harsh winters. In 1887 he moved his family to Mendota Heights, hoping to establish a permanent home for them amid the rolling hills of northeastern Minnesota. He named the village after his young daughter Adelaide (after Adelaide Woodruff Nevin), who had been born in 1854 near present-day Rochester, Minnesota. The village grew slowly until World War II; during that time it had only two residents: John Fenton himself and his wife Eleanor (née Hildreth). After the war ended, Mendota Heights saw an increase in immigration because of wartime shortages of labor in nearby farming communities such as Rochester and Blaine County; by 1970 its population had reached 1,000 people again. Mendota Heights has experienced various transformations over its history: it became known for its stoplight system in the early 1920s; as a bedroom community during World War II; as an agricultural center after Prohibition ended; and finally as a suburb surrounding downtown Minneapolis after Roe v. Wade made abortion legal nationwide in 1973.Today, Mendota Heights remains an agriculturally based community with sizable concentrations of dairy farms, poultry operations, and other agriculture-related businesses; while also containing a significant number of professional offices related to health care services or other industries not typically found elsewhere within urban areas..
Mendota Heights is located in Mendota Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The community was founded in 1881 and was named for General David S. Mendota. The population of the community increased from 350 in 1901 to 2,500 by 1921. The post office closed in 1971.
