Mendota Heights is a census-designated place in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 7,576 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Mendota Heights is located on Mendota Creek and east of Interstate 5 and north of Lake Calhoun. The name "Mendota Heights" was given to the community by Colonel Augustus O'Neil in 1922 as a way to promote agricultural development in the area between Menasha and Clearwater streams. The name has been used ever since by farmers who are interested in growing crops near water supplies that are also important for irrigation purposes. In 1908, a small post office called Mendota was established at what is now the corner of State Street and County Road #2 (present day Mendota Drive). In 1912, a new post office called Clearwater Station was opened, adjacent to what is now Pritchard Park Community School on County Road #1 (now Old Hennepin Boulevard). In 1928, a second post office called Clearwater Rapids was opened which served as an interchange for I-5 and State Highway 6 (present day Highway 169). In 1941, when county roads were reorganized, Mendota Heights became one of six villages within Dakota Township; it remains one of only two villages remaining from this cluster today (the other being Mankato). That year, Harding Avenue was added to the village's nickname as "The avenue that bends". On July 1, 1986, Mendota Heights became officially incorporated as a town; it had been organized three years earlier but not recognized by state government due to its small size compared to other towns within Dakota Township at that time. On January 1st of each year since its incorporation, Mendota Heights opens its doors with an event known as "MTDTowneDay". This celebrates local businesses and residents coming together to celebrate life within their community while showcasing some of their unique features like art galleries or independent farms/lawn care businesses open late during prime shopping hours.) The first settler in Mendota Heights was Hemanus Wright who arrived in 1851 and named it for his father-in-law, Daniel Mendota. The first post office was established in 1853, and the town took its name from a nearby river bend called "Mendota Heights." In 1886, local farmers grew corn on 10 acres (4 ha) they had bought from the Rasmussens east of Mendota Heights. They began to sell their crops to other farmers near Minneapolis and eventuallyited with Ford Motor Company to produce cars there starting in 1908. At that time, the only transportation around here was horseback riding or walking which didn't make much sense since there were no roads running through Mendota Heights!
Mendota Heights is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,653 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants who named it after their farmstead on Mendota Creek. It became a municipality in 1903 and was reincorporated as a city in 1958. The first settler to arrive in what is now Mendota Heights was Ole Hanson, who came overland from Norway on February 14, 1881. He and his family were the only ones to live there for more than one year before another group of Norwegians arrived on March 11th and began to build homes. They called their new community "Mendota Heights" which means "place where the trees grow." Mendota Heights soon became home to many families from St. Louis County and beyond because it had good soil and access to water resources that other settlements lacked. In addition, the location made it easy for people to get around by train or boat because of its close proximity to Lake Mendota and the river that ran through it. In 1905, the City Council voted unanimously to incorporation into the county when they realized that they couldn't keep up with the growth of neighboring communities without having their own authority. This decision marked an important milestone for Mendota Heights because it allowed the city council to become more involved with day-to-day operations within their own community rather than waiting until something bigger happened outside of town just so they could say "oh yes" when someone asked them about something specific inside of town - like building a new fire station or adding streetlights!
