A post office called Mendota Heights was established in 1885, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town of Mendota Heights began to form around 1909 when people who had moved from nearby Waseca started developing their own land hereabouts. By 1912 the town had a store, one school, two churches (oneMethodist and one Congregational), a water tower, and about eighty residents. In 1916 the first telephone line reached Mendota Heights; by 1925 there were five churches and over 1,000 residents. A second phase of development followed during World War II with an influx of soldiers stationed at Fort Snelling (now Hennepin County) across the street from Mendota Heights High School. The town saw an increased population due to this military garrison as well as new housing developments built near downtown Minneapolis that replaced some of the prewar single-family homes. The postwar boom ended abruptly when inflation took hold in 1949; thereafter only modest growth occurred until suburbanization brought more job relocation within city limits in 1974-1975 resulting in a net loss of jobs for locals while new businesses grew through annexation into Mendota Hills which now makes up most of mendOTA HEIGHTS
