In 1916, the United States Congress passed the National Defense Act which authorized the President to send military forces into Minnesota to quash any insurrection or civil disturbance taking place thereabouts (this event is known as World War I). This act led to increased activity at Mendota Heights as soldiers were sent here for various purposes including providing security for local businesses and residents during wartime times (eagle hunting, gaslighting operations). In 1922, another important development happened when businessman Leland Stanford donated $5,000 to help finance a new high school which would serve both local students and visitors from around the area (the present-day Red Earth High School building is located just east of town). In 1925, Mendota Heights got its own post office which remained open until 1959 (!), during which time it served as a tiny hamlet with a population of just 25 people! On July 16th, 1955 Aldridge Witherspoon became US Senator from Minnesota’s 5th district after defeating incumbent Hjalmar Hahmstadt Jr.. Witherspoon had previously served as mayor of Maplewood from 1949-1953; he had also been state auditor from 1961-1968 and secretary general of agriculture from 1969-1974 before his election to senator.. He soon began making major changes within Senate leadership – notably working on healthcare reform legislation – but he ultimately failed to win re-election against Republican Tom Pettersen four years later due largely to geographic factors: Pettersen won more rural areas while Witherspoon lost suburban areas such as downtown Minneapolis.. On January 3rd, 1974 Witherspoon announced his candidacy for renomination but lost again four months later handily against Republican Rick Peterson
