Marshall is a small town in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, located east of downtown on the banks of the Mississippi River. Named for James Marshall, an early settler and first mayor of Minneapolis, it has experienced rapid growth in recent decades as a bedroom community for downtown and north suburban areas. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2010 and grew by more than 10% between 2000 and 2010. The Marshall School District serves portions of the town and its surrounding rural communities. The town was laid out on a peninsula formed by two forks of the Mississippi River. The present day center of Marshall was developed along one fork, while development along the other fork proceeded slowly until the late 20th century when both forks were amalgamated into one municipality. The first settlers arrived in 1851, when James Marshall moved from Illinois to claim land near what is now Marshalltown on the eastern bank of the river. He founded what would become Minneapolis on this land, becoming its first mayor in 1857. In 1862, he sold his interest in Minneapolis to Jacob Riis for $10,000 cash. As president of the First National Bank (now part of Wells Fargo), Riis helped develop downtown Minneapolis into what it is today with his donations and gifts including seven acres (2 hectares) of land at Third Street & Union Avenue for a public square that later became Central Park. Marshall had another significant impact on Minnesota during World War II when he donated 1 million dollars to help finance airplane production at nearby Stinson Air Force Base; this allowed Minnesota to join America's military effort against Japan without having to ask Congress for permission or receive bailout money from Wall Street bankers like JP Morgan Chase & Co.). In 1945-46, he also donated 250 acres (100 hectares) bordering Marshalltown southward on Interstate 94 so that future residents could have access to water rights necessary for farming purposes without having their homes flooded during winter floods caused by heavy rainfalls upstream fromMinnesota's capital city Kuopio). In 1951-52 he contributed an additional 200 acres (100 hectares) extending into central Marshalltown so that there would be enough room available for businesses adjacent to I-94 while still providing access to water rights essential for farming purposes downstream from Kuopio). These donations helped create modern day Marshalls as we know them today – a cluster of modest housing developments set amid rolling farmland ringed by shopping malls and freeways close enough so that everyone can get around without driving but far enough away so that they don't experience high population density like some older towns did before consolidation began among municipalities within each county/county seat). Marshall is home base not just to those who live within its borders but also people who commute daily either through I-94 or County Road 12 which runs parallel across Cook County government limits just outside town limits

The community was founded in 1892 by Hiram Topeka and John Prentice as Marshall Depot on the present site of Marshall University. The depot served as a transportation hub for farmers and their goods travelling to and from nearby farms. In 1906, Marshall Depot was renamed Marshall Lake after James Egan Marshall, president of Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1916, the town became a city when it incorporated under the name of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. After World War II ended and property values plummeted in many American cities due to war-related destruction and layoff rates, Marshalls began to come back into popularity beginning in the early 1990s thanks to its highly educated workforce (52% women), lively nightlife scene (including several bars/clubs), good schools (including four colleges), low crime rate (relative to most U.S towns), and wide variety of recreational opportunities available including fishing, swimming, hiking/mountain biking/climbing/horseback riding etc.. In recent years there has been interest from developers interested in building new subdivisions or commercial developments on marshalling land used for agriculture or other agricultural purposes only; however such plans have not yet proceeded despite strong community opposition - see: "Community opposition against proposed development near Marshalling Lake" below for more information about this issue
