In 1857, he sold his entire township to Samuel Silliman for $1,000 cash and ten acres (40 hectares) of land nearpresent-day Marshall Park on Buffalo Road. Samuel Silliman had also purchased 640 acres (240 ha) southwest of present-day Marshall from Andrew Dorrance for $4,520 cash and three horses in 1851. Andrew Dorrance had founded what is now Stroudsburg, Minnesota about northwest of Marshall on an important crossing point on the Red River that led to Fargo and then to Minneapolis. In 1872, James Pumphrey bought 1/2 mile (0.6 km) south of present-day Easton Avenue from Averil Stewart for $875 cash and 650 acres (240 ha) of forested country including parts of today's Grosse Pointe Woods National Monument as well as much later acreage gifted by Anna Janssen crossed Browns Bayou just north of Easton Avenue between Green Street and Carondelet Roads). Pumphrey renamed this tract White Earth Indian Nation Land after purchasing it from the Ottowa Creekside Band which controlled most easternMinnesota territory at that time. This purchase encouraged other settlers to come to Marshall because they knew that this tract would be available without exceeding Native American title restrictions attached thereto
