Marshall is a town in Marshall County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. The name "Marshall" is derived from the Dakota word for "big Sioux," and refers to the large Standing Rock Sioux tribe who lived there before European settlers arrived. The town was founded in 1878 by John H. Spurlock and named after General James K. Polk's brother-in-law, General David Siegel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1902, the town merged with neighboring White Cloud Township to form Marshalltown. In 1957, Marshalltown incorporated as a city and became one of only two cities in Minnesota with a mayor-council government system. The community of Marshall was platted on March 10, 1878 by John H Spurlock with the goal of providing an agricultural area for settlers near what is now Minneapolis/St Paul. By October 1880, it had 1 grocery store and 2 blacksmiths operating; by May 1886 it had 12 stores and 50 residents. On January 15, 1888 the first post office opened in Marshalltown with Wm J Pugh as owner/operator and clerk; mail would be delivered to St Peters (now Minneapolis) until 1907 when First National Bank moved into place on Main Street downtown which served as the post office until 1912 when it moved out to Fourth Street in downtown Marshallsville which also served as the town hall until 1915 when it moved into its present building on State Avenue northeast in marshallsville today known as City Hall Annex

Marshall was founded by Alexander Marshall in 1854. The town became a part of the United States in 1868. It had a population of about 10,000 people when it entered into Union County. In 1870, the town acquired its present boundaries and name from General George S. Patton, who served as commander of Union County during the American Civil War.
